Celebrating Nigeria’s Independence at Makoko: A Heartfelt Encounter

On the occasion of Nigeria’s Independence Day in October 2023, the Giving Is Healing Foundation had the distinct honor of visiting Makoko, one of Lagos’ most unique communities. The Baale of Makoko welcomed us with open arms, and the warmth of his people was palpable throughout our visit. We were deeply touched by the genuine hospitality we received, a true reflection of Nigeria’s enduring spirit.

Perhaps the most moving part of our experience was interacting with the children of Makoko. Their unbridled joy and pride in celebrating their nation were infectious. With broad smiles, they posed for photographs, proudly holding up Nigerian flags and wearing caps that symbolized not just the Independence Day celebrations but the resilience and vibrancy that define our country. These moments of camaraderie were a poignant reminder of Nigeria’s vast potential and its future leaders.

As we reflect on this unforgettable experience, we cannot help but feel an overwhelming sense of pride in our great nation. Nigeria is a rich tapestry of extraordinary people, diverse cultures, and a deep heritage, which together symbolize the greatness of Africa. Our time in Makoko reaffirmed this belief: the resilience of the human spirit, especially in the face of adversity, is the foundation upon which our nation’s greatness is built.

In light of this, we join hands with fellow Nigerians in urging our government to continue guiding the country toward even greater heights. Nigeria’s potential is boundless, and through unity, perseverance, and inclusive governance, there are endless opportunities waiting to be unlocked.

As we look ahead, we say with conviction: God bless Nigeria. May our nation’s journey be marked by progress, prosperity, and unyielding unity, ensuring a brighter future for generations to come.
